Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

12.24.04 (1:55 am)   [edit]

I have heard this song played as a Christmas song lately. Does it really fit the genre of a Christmas song? I'm not sure. And why don't we play Christmas songs all year? Not continuously, but mixed in with other Christian tunes (If it were played around the clock, I think I would go nuts). It is important to celebrate Christ all year! I think my all-time favorite Christmas carols/songs are Oh Holy Night and
O Come Emmanuel. There are a few others I enjoy, but these two cut sharply into my heart.

Oh Holy Night is one I memorized and performed with my Sunday school class when I was 5 or 6 years old. O Come Emmanuel reminds me that Christ is our savior. He will come save us from our sins and in his holy name all oppression shall cease!!!! O Holy Night   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p;     ;         & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p;     ;         & nbsp;

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining.
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices!
Oh night divine! Oh night when Christ was born!
Oh night divine! Oh night! Oh night divine!

Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother,
and in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we;
Let all within us praise his holy name.
Christ is the lord, that ever, ever praise we.

Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices!
Oh night divine! Oh night when Christ was born!
Oh night divine! Oh night! Oh night divine!

O Come O Come Emmanuel lyrics   & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p;     ;

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times did'st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O Holy Night has been really special to me this year. Some of the words became alive to me- especially 'Long lay the world, in sin and error PINING- 'TIL He appeared, and the SOUL FELT ITS WORTH.' The idea of that suffering and waiting- something every one of us feels at some point, and the the satisfaction that Christ gives- the worth and value that we find in Him, which we long and search for in many places. We/I just want to belong and be special to someone, and to be reassured that it is already taken care of- no need to fret, is a big relief and comfort for me. It's also invigorating, like how crisp air and snow can be, except in a more spiritual sense.

Yeah - O Come Emmanuel has a really powerful message, too. The best Christmas songs are definitely the ones that talk about Christ :)
